Inter-Guiana Games 2012 preparation begins

AFTER a detailed evaluation of the 2011 Inter-Guiana Games by the three stakeholders French Guiana, Suriname and Guyana, the three countries pledged their commitment to work for the ongoing development of the Games in all of its disciplines. In November of 2012, French Guiana will host the games in athletics, swimming, football, cycling and chess, and Guyana has commenced training preparations in three of the mentioned disciplines.
Director of Sport  Neil Kumar told Chronicle Sport yesterday  that a decision has been made at the evaluation meeting that no country will host all of the sporting disciplines at one time, since the costing will be high so the shared hosting with another country will be the new approach.
Kumar indicated that special mention was made of the development of athletics in Guyana and noted as a testimony the qualifying time by two of our athletes who qualified  for the London 2012 Olympics as a result of keen developmental participation from the IGG.
Guyana and Suriname will be participating in a number of friendlies in the disciplines of football, basketball, swimming, chess and volleyball, leading up to the November Games and the preparation in youth academies has started.
Last Saturday, the football academy kicked off at the Carifesta Sports Complex under former national coach Gordon Braithwaite with over 25 youths participating.
Guyana will also benefit from other international border visits from Bon Fin, Brazil and other neighbouring areas in football and volleyball.
Kumar noted that the NSC management committees are currently exploring the possibility to have female participation in football and will seek all the necessary avenues to have that done.
Lamenting the fact that there is a great need for this, yet no programmes are forthcoming from the national body, Kumar said his office will work towards this implementation by 2013.
