FOR residents of the Dharm Shala in Albouystown, Georgetown, Christmas Day 2011 will remain indelibly etched on their minds. For they had one of their best ever Christmas parties on that day, with lots to eat and drink, and gifts as well.
They were treated to a sumptuous 12-dish menu comprising mutton curry and rice; vegetable rice; dhal; pineapple chicken; macaroni and cheese; slices of both black and sponge cakes; apples and grapes; aerated drinks and sweets; salad; Indian pholouri and bigani, which they all enjoyed thoroughly, executive member Ms. Pamela Ramsaroop said.
And to add to the ecstasy, they each received a gift package containing toiletries and a shirt. Sharing the excitement with them on that occasion were other senior citizens from around South Georgetown – some of them living on the pavement. But they were all accorded the same privileged treatment at the party, with no discrimination whatsoever.
Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds was special guest at the party, making his 19th appearance at the annual function, and he did the honours of extending Christmas greetings to the residents and others present during his brief remarks to the gathering.
The residents were all excited at the very thought of being honoured with the presence of the Prime Minister once more, and they expressed their deep appreciation for the privilege of having his company for Christmas.
Prime Minister Hinds was introduced by Canon Rheil of the Christ Church Anglican Diocese, who opened up the programme with a service and a narration of the Christmas Story, paving the way for the Prime Minister’s remarks. The Canon was, in turn, introduced by Attorney-at-Law, Clarissa Rheil.
Meanwhile, executive member of the Board of Directors, Ms. Pamela Ramsaroop gave an overview of the developments at the institution over the last year, and cited plans for the years ahead.
The residents conveyed their thanks and appreciation to director of the institution, Mr. Harry S. Ramsaroop, for his continued investment in their sustenance and overall livelihoods through the years, and this was done on their behalf by the Dharm Shala’s cook, who presented a Christmas card in sharing brief sentiments.
Mr. Ramsaroop, in ill health at this time, was unable to join them this Christmas. The vote of thanks was delivered by Secretary of the Board of Directors, Ms. Kella Ramsaroop.
