Bring back the community centres

I AM VERY happy to read your editorial titled “The burning need to revive community centres.”  My heart is probably bleeding like yours. I have to confess that I am a product of community centres. The days you mentioned are the days I grew up on the East Coast. The community centre in our area was our home. We spent more enjoyable time there than any place else. In my days we participated in all the  games that were permitted there like cricket, volleyball, dominoes, ping pong, checkers, cards and even weightlifting.
My batch went on to represent our community and some of us even went on to represent the country at the sugar estates level where a few emerged champions  in different disciplines. We were proud to support our community and our community was proud of us. The people were always behind, cheering us along. I must  say also that not only community centres, but all other organisations have dwindled to almost nothing.
Editor, organisations are pillars that knit people together. Be it sports, religious, political etc. Where there is unity there is strength. I passionately agree with you that there is a burning need to revive these centres. Our communities are in dire need for good and dedicated leaders also. It is steering and not drifting that can revive and save our community centres and organisations. Let’s restart the engines. Lets rededicate our service to build communities, regions, counties and ultimately our wonderful country. Again I couldn’t agree with you more.
