GUYANA’S latest amateur boxing sensation Imran `Magic’ Khan will attempt to add more notches to his belt when he appears on a card in neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) tomorrow. The 18-year-old ‘fire-hands’, who hails from Albouystown will fight USA-based Trinidadian Lawrence Singh, who is undefeated in nine fights.
President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Steve Ninvalle said his association received a late request for a bantamweight and “hustled out” Khan yesterday morning.
“We are supportive of the efforts of our Caribbean counterparts so even though it was a late request we felt compelled to honour it,” Ninvalle said.
“Imran Khan is currently one of the best we have now and an Olympic prospect and I think we have a duty to keep our boxers active.”
Khan was accompanied by GABA Technical Director Terrence Poole who will double as manager/coach for the trip which is Khan’s third overseas engagement for the year.
The talented fighter secured a bronze medal at the ALBA Games in Venezuela in August and recently brought home gold from the Ronald Wilson Memorial Games in Barbados, while he was also selected to participate in the three-week Road to London training programme to be held in Cardiff, Wales next February and March.
Poole and Khan are expected back in Guyana on Saturday and the countries participating on tomorrow’s card are Bermuda, Columbia, Guyana, USA, Venezuela and host T&T.
