Christmastime fires leave three dead, several homeless

CHIEF Fire Officer, Marlon Gentle said, yesterday, that the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is still probing to ascertain the causes of the blazes in Public Road, Kitty, Georgetown and Berbice, in which three persons perished. He said, in the case of the Lot 38 Public Road, Kitty conflagration, they are working along with the police, as the prime suspect, who escaped from the inferno, fled the scene and has not been apprehended.
Gentle said the name was given to the police, who are looking for the man to question him in relation to the disaster in which two persons were burnt to death and two houses destroyed early Friday morning.
There is some degree of suspicion as it relates to the two loud explosions which were heard prior to the outbreak and it may be the work of an arsonist.
Police confirmed they are investigating the so far unknown origin of what occurred about 00:45 hrs on Saturday, which resulted in the death of pensioner Cyril Robinson, 90 and a relative, Alfred Stephens, 17.
Firemen responded and extinguished the flames which caused the destruction of the neighbouring buildings where the charred remains of Robinson and Stephens were found.
The occurrence at Number 78 Village, Corriverton, Berbice, on Saturday morning, claimed the life of a labourer, Humadat Phurkokatam, 42.
The Fire Chief said the victim returned home after imbibing and attempted to cook but fell asleep and was burnt to death.
The deceased had lived alone and neighbours observed fire coming from the house and raised an alarm but too late to save him.
Another fire, at Lot 8 Reliance, East Canje, also in Berbice, on Friday left a dozen people homeless after it swept through a two-storey dwelling house while the occupants were preparing for Christmas.
The house next door was saved but slightly scorched as the GFS attended to the situation that affected two sets of families.
The latest fire, at Number 54 Village, Corentyne, left one man homeless, he having set his own house on fire after a domestic dispute with relatives on Tuesday morning.
The Fire Chief said Govinda acted in a drunken rage during a social gathering at the residence where there was drinking of alcohol, dancing and music.
