TRAFFIC was reportedly halted for just over an hour on the Fort Canje Bridge, last Friday afternoon, after the driver of a motor vehicle, PPP 43, which was attempting to overtake a donkey cart, lost control of his vehicle and collided with another car, HB 6569, which travelling in the opposite direction.
According to an eyewitness, motor car PPP 43, whose driver’s name was later given as Davindra Hemraj, was driving at a fast rate of speed when he collided with hire car being driven by Devindra Bhopaul, of Port Mourant, Corentyne.
“These young drivers are not adhering to signs. There is a sign [on approaching the bridge] which state that there must be ‘no overtaking on the bridge’, but yet they disregard it. This accident could have resulted in fatalities, but there is a God who intervened just in time,” the eyewitness said.
The impact of the accident resulted in minor injuries to both drivers. The four passengers in the hire car at the time of the accident were treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital, and sent away.(Jeune VanKeric)
