In Essequibo…

Devonshire Castle villagers thankful for new seawall
VILLAGERS of Devonshire Castle on the Essequibo Coast are very thankful to the Government and European Union (EU) for the new rip-rap sea defence structure that is under construction.
They said the project, replacing a very old and collapsed seawall, is another testimony to the massive development under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government, to safeguard the coastlands from the furious Atlantic Ocean.
One resident, Mr. Pooran Persaud, who is a retired supervisor in the Sea Defence Department, said the new wall, when completed, will be a plus for the village because thousands of acres of rice and other farmlands will be protected from flooding during extreme high tides.
He lauded former President Bharrat Jagdeo for his great leadership and for facilitating the funding through the EU.
Thousands of tons of boulders are being used to build the seawall and several tons of earth for the embankment, all being undertaken by BK International.
