Jackman, Bissu and Singh crowned champions
SALANAS Jackman, Niram Bissu and Jeremey Singh were all crowned champions of their respective categories, when action in the second annual Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) organised Banks DIH PowerAde sponsored national table tennis tournament got underway yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Jackman won the Girls 10 and Under category, after ending as the runner-up last year, while Bissu and Singh walked away with Boys 8 and Under and 10 and Under categories, with Singh being pushed to the hilt by the pint sized Tyriq Saunders.
Jackman defeated national badminton queen Priyanna Ramdhani 11-3, 11-6, 9-11 and 11-7, after she gained a bye in the first round before disposing of Simran Bissu 11-4, 11-1 and 11-5 in her preliminary round matchup, while Ramdhani also defeated Bissu 11-3, 11-4 and 11-5.
In the Boys 8 and Under division, Niram Bissu defeated Leyon O’ Brien 11-5, 11-5 and 11-6, and Hemant Dalip 11-1, 11-9, 11-3, while O’Brien came from two sets down to defeat Dalip 8-11, 5-11, 11-7, 12-10 and 11-9, to end as runner-up to Bissu.
In the Boys 10 and Under category, Saunders defeated Jeevan Dalip 11-6, 11-7, 11-8 while Singh disposed of Vincent Henry 11-4, 11-2, 11-2 and in the final, Singh overcame Saunders 11-6, 16-14 and 11-5 to come out on top.
The action will continue today from 0:900hrs at the same venue, while the opening ceremony which will have Minister of Sport Dr Frank Anthony, Director of Sports Neil Kumar and president of the GTTA and Commissioner of Police Henry Greene, delivering feature remarks, will get underway at 16:00hrs.
