THE ruling party ran into an ‘I. C. E.’ berg. Like the Titanic, they felt that their record was almost unbeatable. In their case it looks like the ‘I’ was a lack of information made available at earlier and critical times. First charges, questions or rumours should have been quicker and more clearly addressed before they became believable.
Too many questions were left hanging or not fully explained about projects, decisions, rumours, etc. The ‘C’ represents the perception if not the reality that the top people in the government were corrupt.
In the eyes of many, this excused the widespread demanding of a “piece” or “something” from too many public servants. The “E” is the worst part of the Guyanese virus – Ethnicity, out of which comes cries of marginalisation.
Here, the political leaders within and without the government failed their brothers and sisters.
Unless one has a decent understanding of business practices, you tend to ignore the basic fact – that the average person can best acquire wealth by savings (not likely); investing in one’s own business or someone else’s business, hoping it becomes profitable.
Marginalisation is best cured by helping people see the opportunities in agriculture, trades, and mining and not just seek jobs in stores or the public service. Jobs will feed you, but self employment could raise you higher. Workers are renting but it is the businessmen and farmers that are building the houses we may envy. Remember, the first person to marginalise you is yourself.
Rumours should have been addressed quickly
