Heavy voter turnout, peaceful polling

…say British High Commission observers
OBSERVERS from the British High Commission have confirmed that there was heavy voter turnout and peaceful polling at each  of the 30-odd polling stations they had visited throughout the day and up to 17:45 hrs yesterday.

The two-man team, comprising Ms. Ioana Logofa and Mrs. Andrew Ayre, reported that they had visited polling stations at Linden, on the East Bank and the West Bank of Demerara, South Ruimveldt and Lodge, and their observations and experiences had led them to this conclusion.

He disclosed that there had been an incident involving a party functionary at the Lodge Secondary School, but that it was an isolated incident, and not considered severe.

Ayre and Logofa were present at Lodge Secondary school at closing time.
They both explained that the team intended to  remain at the polling booth to observe the count and  the removal of the ballot boxes from that location.

Meanwhile, a roundabout late yesterday afternoon revealed that several polling stations closed promptly at 18:00 hrs.

There were no reported incidents of anyone being locked out for being late.

When the Guyana Chronicle arrived at the Lodge Secondary School, Ioana Logofa and Andrew Ayre said that while there had been no issues with the 30 stations that they had visited, they came across some minor issues in relation to misbehaviour of residents within the Lodge community.

Meanwhile, some of the residents from Campbellville who had already cast their votes had gathered outside of the Campbellville Secondary School throwing snide remarks at the media.

Several of the children within the area, one of whom carried a cricket bat around with him, along with adults that were present,  used foul language to abuse members of the media, calling them “Civic”.
