US-registered Cessna 152 crash lands at Wakenaam

THERE are no reported injuries after a two-seater plane, yesterday, crash landed on the Essequibo island of Wakenaam. Reports are that the US-registered single engine two-seater Cessna 152 was travelling from the twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to Guyana, then onto Boa Vista, Brazil. However, at around 10:00 hrs yesterday, the plane crash-landed into a rice field, which caused some damages to the propellers, wheels and nose of the small plane.
Two persons were aboard the aircraft, both of whom are pilots: a commercial pilot, Mr. Steven Sanchez and the owner, Mr. Paulo Souza.
According to the owner, the small plane was purchased in Miami and the two men were ferrying it to Brazil.
He noted that he was aware that there was a problem and, unfortunately, flew past several airstrips because the two pilots were unfamiliar with the territory.
The Wakenaam Airstrip is located some 500 metres from where the plane crash landed.
Souza said the craft’s engine lost power at 2,000 feet and he tried his best to make a smooth landing, but was unable to avoid the damages that the small plane sustained.
