Defendant remanded but…

Magistrate orders probe into past 72 hours detention
LESLIE Subryan was yesterday remanded to prison, until January 9, 2012, on a drug trafficking charge.
Meantime, Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, before whom he appeared and pleaded not guilty, ordered an investigation into his complaint that he was in custody for more than 72 hrs.
Subryan is charged with having trafficked 24 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) on November 10.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said ranks were conducting an exercise around the Stabroek Market area in Georgetown and a search of the defendant yielded the narcotic in a bag he was holding.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Ronald Burch-Smith, for the defence, told the court Subryan was amongst a group of men but he alone was charged.
