THIRTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD Cliff Richards, of Lot 18 Strand, New Amsterdam, Berbice, has been charged with fraudulent conversion.
When he appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, in the New Amsterdam court on Monday, it was alleged that he was entrusted, by his employer Manniram Harricharan, with a number of tyres, valued $259,000, which he converted to his own use and benefit.
The defendant pleaded not guilty and was allowed $50,000 bail.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said between August 26 and October 5, Harricharan gave Richards 76 tyres, his employee, who was left in charge of a vulcanizing shop, at Lot 17 Strand, New Amsterdam, but when checks were subsequently made, Richards could not give account for them.
The case will be called, again, on November 30
