KINDLY permit me a space within your letters’ columns to highlight an extravagant effort by an individual who has shown great character by solely sponsoring the recently concluded “Rock-a-Way” cricket (hardball) competition on the East Coast Demerara.
At a time when cricket seems to be lacking enthusiasm and motivation on the East Coast, the Rock-a-Way-sponsored competition changed that perception by bringing encouragement and the sense of feeling among cricketers. Now they want to be a part of something that has much to offer.
This competition, which was initiated and sponsored by Mr. Alli of Rock-a-Way Auto Sales, has been hailed as one of the best, and has proven that much more can be done to improve the level of cricket played on the East Coast.
The efforts of Mr. Alli are highly commendable and praiseworthy, since the competition was entirely unique from any previously held, and it had and still has a significant impact on the minds of the many individuals who participated in that competition.
At a presentation ceremony held on November 11, 2011 at Rock-a-Way Auto Sales, players were mesmerised and astonished by this extraordinary ceremony. Cricketers were motivated and encouraged by the rewards received for their performances throughout the competition. Every effort in every aspect of the game was rewarded. Many young cricketers who are from impoverished backgrounds benefited greatly by not only receiving cricket gear, but being given the opportunity to improve their talents and go after their aspirations.
This overwhelming contribution towards cricket on the East Coast deserves recognition, and should be viewed as a motivational factor for future development of cricket.
I would like to implore and encourage others who have the capacity to heed this example and contribute meaningfully to the development of cricket on the East Coast Demerara.
‘Rock-a-Way’ competition has re-energised East Coast Demerara cricket
