— Peter Persaud
The United Force (TUF) Presidential Candidate, Peter Persaud, yesterday confirmed that party Chairman, Ismail Muhammad, has resigned.
In an invited comment, Persaud told the Guyana Chronicle that the party’s membership is still unclear why the move was made.
“He submitted his resignation last week, but as to why he resigned, we are not sure. He did not state his reasons for leaving,” Persaud said.
Over the weekend Muhammad took to the campaign platform in Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni/ Mazaruni), in support of A Partnership for National Unity.
He told supporters that he and the leadership council are now firmly behind the leadership of David Granger as presidential candidate.
Persaud stated that the resignation is unexpected, since up to Nomination Day, October 27th, Muhammad was firmly in support of The United Force, being the one that took the party’s List of Candidates to City Hall.
Persaud maintained that TUF is moving forward with its preparations to contest the upcoming polls.
“We only just came out of the Moruca sub-region. Today (yesterday) we visited Charity…we are on the ground meeting with the people,” he said.
When asked about the response, he noted that the responses received sent mixed signals, but maintained that TUF is confident going into elections.
“We are going forward as an independent party…we are confident about the upcoming elections,” Persaud said.
