IT seems to me that Chandra Narine Sharma, the owner of television station Channel 6, is above the law. He can go on his station to broadcast anything he feels, insult people, attack their character, and allow anyone to say anything on his station. He tells himself that no law or regulation can stop him or do him anything.
Sharma has supporters of his lawlessness, including the Guyana Press Association, political opposition parties, trade unionists, journalists, and the Guyana Bar Association.
However, this PPP/C government will not tolerate Sharma’s infringements of people’s rights. If Sharma cannot stop his nonsense, he must be made to pay the penalty. And so President Bharrat Jagdeo was right to impose a lenient penalty of a four-month ban on his television station.
Those who are defending Sharma are doing it because of their hatred of the government. They are contending that government has long wanted to close down Sharma, it will avoid free and fair elections this month, the timing coincides with elections, and other excuses hold no good reason why Sharma should not be penalised.
What Sharma’s station had done to Bishop Juan Edghill’s character is irreparable. Sharma also allowed Vieira to attack religion in Guyana and promote racism. Sharma will have to learn his lesson. The critics cannot help him. Sharma has been violating the terms of his licence for too long. The government must see that Sharma stops his nonsense.
