A rice and cattle farmer is assisting the Berbice police with their investigations following the fatal shooting of Ramzan Alli, 27, of Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Berbice, on Sunday afternoon.
The suspect, Shandukar Seenarine, alias Shamo, also of Cotton Tree, remains in custody at Fort Wellington Police Station. He is alleged to have driven his motor pick up GKK 4934 to his cultivation plot in the backlands, where Alli was seen riding a horse.
The businessman, 47, who had previously purchased properties once owned by Ricks and Sari Co, stopped his vehicle approximately 20 feet away from Alli, before allegedly saying ‘It has been a long time since I am looking for you.’
Reports say that after verbal threats, the suspect removed a nine millimetre Smith and Wesson firearm from his vehicle and shot Alli in his chest.
A cattle-hand who witnessed the incident hurriedly left the scene and reported the incident to the police.
Alli was taken to the Fort Wellington Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A nine millimetre spent shell, along with the gun was recovered from the scene.
When contacted, Seenarine’s wife told this newspaper that she had no idea what may have triggered the attack. However a neighbour recalled the suspect complaining about theft at his farm.
