51st National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field C’Ship starts today

TODAY, the 51st annual Guyana eachers’ Union (GTU)-organised Digicel National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championship gets under way with the Cycling Road Race, Athletics Road Race and Swimming competitions.
Cyclists and athletes will assemble at the new GTU ground on Carifesta Avenue, formerly the Softball Ground, (opposite the National Park entrance), for the start of the two events which will be run off simultaneously at .06:00hrs..
A 40km course is set for the cyclists while a 10km course is set for the track athletes, both of which will conclude at the same venue.
The championship then goes to the recently commissioned National Aquatic Centre for the historic event – the first event to be hosted at the venue.
Tomorrow the opening ceremony of the championships gets under way at 09.00hrs at the Guyana National Stadium where the remainder of the events will be held.
Expected to make appearances and brief speeches are President Bharat Jagdeo, Minister of Education Shaik Baksh and GTU president Colin Bynoe.
