A CUSTOMS Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) officer was fired at when he went to conduct a search at a Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice sawmill, last November 3, Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry heard yesterday. Before her at the time, was Baldeo Rai Singh, of Lot 19 Crabwood Creek, charged with discharging a loaded firearm at CANU officer Ashley Williams, with intent to maim, disfigure or cause him grievous bodily harm.
Other charges against Singh, to all of which he also pleaded not guilty, said he was in possession of a .38 Taurus pistol and eight rounds of matching ammunition, without being the holder of a firearm licence.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said Williams was acting on information when he went to the sawmill and Singh shot at him and made a failed attempt to escape.
The prosecutor said the defendant was in company with another person when arrested and taken into custody.
The magistrate upheld an objection to bail by the police prosecutor, overruled the application by Defence Counsel Vic Puran and transferred the case to Springlands Court, at Corentyne, too, for tomorrow.
