Azore was found with a long hook with the tracksuit at the end.
Ten goats qualify for Derby
(Guyana Chronicle: September 2, 1986)
TEN GOATS have now qualified for the biggest goat-racing event to be held for the year, the Derby coming up December 7.
Dark Castle, Do Something, Forest Bright and Princess Mala qualified in the feature races on Sunday, the final day of the August meeting at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda.
They now join Wonder, Go-Go Girl, Pampas Baby, Mr. B, Stay Up Front and Lemme Go who qualified at meetings held previously.
Forest Bright and Dark Castle won their events from Princess Mala and Do Something respectively.
Qualification for the Derby does not end there, however, as another four goats will join the 10 for the big event.
The four will advance at the next meeting, scheduled for September 28.
The Derby will have prize money totaling some $20,000, along with a number of trophies for the champion pilot, animal and trainer.
At Sunday’s meeting, Wonder continued her fine run, placing first in two more events, bringing her tally to four wins in the August 2 meeting, thus being crowned the Champion animal.
The Champion pilot was N. Chase, who won beside Wonder during her excellent running, while N. Carter, with 11wins over the two days, took the Champion trainer’s award.
Forest Bright was in winner’s row on Sunday, taking two events, while another top goat, Lemme Go, won one of the races.
She might have won another, the final event of the day, but the pilot fell during the race.
He, however, recovered to guide the goat into third position.
The winner was Shout it Out, with Wonder second.

Orphaned manatee adopted by the Zoo
(Guyana Chronicle: August 18, 1985)
CHRISTENED ‘Patrick George’, this young manatee contentedly clasps his flippers together, relaxes on his back and sucks his feeding bottle at mealtime.
Patrick was left orphaned and practically helpless after his mother was killed in the vicinity of the MMA ADA (Mahaica, Mahaicony, Abary Agricultural Development Authority) project.
He was later transported to Georgetown, where Agriculture Ministry officials responsible for the Guyana Zoo hurriedly secured the use of a private swimming pool to serve as Patrick’s temporary home.
Cut and bruised, he gradually responded to treatment, and is now reported to be in tremendous spirits.
Veterinary Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Karen Pilgrim, who is in charge of Patrick, mixes his feed, which includes corn meal and milk — a nutritious substitute for his mother’s milk.
The manatee, an endangered species, is a mammal and herbivore, and grows to about twelve feet.
Patrick will have to be fed until he is a year old, when his diet will be grass and other vegetation.
However, Patrick George may soon need a new home.
While the Ministry of Agriculture is considering building a tiled pool in the zoo, there is a shortage of funds.
The public is therefore being asked to contribute financially and otherwise in creating a new home for orphaned Patrick.
Donors can contact the Chief Agricultural Officer, Neville McAndrew, at the Ministry of Agriculture.
