One of two postponed trials starts today
THE trials of two men separately indicted for murder were postponed after the accused sought additional time to consult with their respective lawyers.
State Counsel Rhondel Weaver had proposed to present the indictment against Wazim Bux and Chetram Nowrang. However, in response to questions by Justice Roxanne George, the prisoners indicated they needed more days to retain their respective attorneys.
On the list, signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms, Shalimar Ali-Hack, 36 cases are for trial. However, of that number 15 of the indicted cannot be contacted and arrest warrants have been issued for them.
Among those listed for trial are the Rose Hall bank robbery accused, Terrence Azore, Marlon Lepps and Henry Lindie as well as high seas, convicted robber Ram Sookdial called Kevin Narine, a prison escapee who is in custody in Suriname but is to face another trial for robbery.
Meanwhile, the October Criminal Sessions of the Berbice Assizes opened with the traditional march past, at which Justice Roxanne George took the salute outside the High Court building in New Amsterdam.
