‘Ride for Life 5-Stage cycle road race…

Lewis wins 3rd stage in 58:58s
MARK Lewis led the way  yesterday for the Guyanese contingent  as they secured four of the top six places in the 35-mile third stage of the Ride for Life five-stage Cycle road race which took place from Wales to Parika with 36 cyclists.

Lewis who resides in Linden completed the course in a time of 58:58 seconds as he was followed by fellow patriots, Raynauth Jeffrey (Junior), national captain Robin Persaud, first stage winner Godfrey Pollydore, Team USA’s Michael Larsen and Leer Nunes, respectively.

Today the event continues with the 62-mile fourth stage from Supenaam to Suddie which commences at 07:30 hrs.

However, none of the Guyanese performances was good enough to unseat Jonathan Teeter who still leads going into the penultimate stage.
Teeter, who is sponsored by Paso Prime Beef Company was second in the first stage; won the second stage in a record time and finished with a bunch in a time of 59:38s.

The race commenced with a steamy approach form Albert Philander and he was tailed by the USA team of Adam Carr, Henner Rodel, Nicholas Sorrensen, Larsen and Teeter while Barbadian Jamal Eastman  and Guyana’s Enzo Matthews was also in the bunch.

Matthews stepped up the pace and led but found he had no endurance for that level which paved the way for Lewis and Teeter to catch up and lead the pack.
The Bagotsville prime prize was claimed by Lewis who exhibited some intelligent riding as he led for a period before he was caught at the Demerara  Harbour Bridge by a bunch that included Persaud, Carr, Matthews, 17 year-old Jeffrey and Cazala Christophe.

The pack journeyed together until the American riders joined them and took the lead but Lewis stepped up once again to claim the second prime prize momentarily before the race concluded.
