Lawyer Hannifah Jordan says success was due to support from Housing…
LEGAL and Conveyancing Officer, Hannifah Jordan, the Hugh Wooding Law School graduate who was awarded the Pelham Sloane-Seale Memorial Prize for Best Performance in Conveyancing and Registration of Title, said her success was due to support from the Central Housing & Planning Authority.
Before entering Hugh Wooding, the 29-year old member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church had served the Central Housing & Planning Authority in various capacities. She served as Legal and Conveyancing Officer, Deputy Land Administration Manager, and Corporate Secretary.
She was also a member of the Editorial Committee of The GAVEL, a publication of the Hugh wooding Law School, for the academic year 2010-2011.
She also served as District Coordinator of Young Adults in the Guyana-Suriname Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.
After her petition for admission was presented to Admitting Judge, Justice Winston Patterson, she told the Judge, “Perhaps today might not have been possible without the generous support of my sponsoring agency, the Central Housing and Planning Authority. In seeking to strengthen its institutional capacity, I was given the opportunity to pursue my professional aspiration.
“The Honourable Minister of Housing and Water, Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority , Myrna Pitt, you noted my contribution, dedication and potential, and gave me your approval; a simple thank you does not seem enough,” the advocate declared.
She had special praise for the staff of the Central Housing & Planning beyond self.
The young lawyer also thanked the judge for his words of advice, her parents for their guidance, and Mr. Edward Luckhoo, Senior Counsel, for ably presenting her petition for admission.
In presenting the petition, Mr. Luckhoo noted that the new lawyer had been Corporate Secretary, with the Central Housing and Planning Authority, from October 1, 2011.
As a consequence, she would have to review and update the legal provisions governing the powers, duties and functions of the Central Housing and Planning Authority and to advise the Board in relation to its statutory obligations.
Also, to ensure that all corporate filing and legislative requirements are met.
She will also supervise the preparation of litigation, work with outside counsel to develop strategies and advise management on the appropriate course of action to be pursued; provide research, factual information, counsel and guidance on legal questions and issues; and assist in negotiations and the drafting and review of all agreements entered into by the Authority.
