Brooks stars again as HPC trounce Afghanistan

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, (CMC) – West Indies’ High Performance Centre easily brushed aside Afghanistan in their Twenty20 clash here Saturday, to win their second straight game on their tour of Dubai. Playing at the ICC Global Cricket Academy, the HPC rattled up 151 for six off their allotted 20 overs and then dismissed the Afghans for a paltry 95, with 14 balls remaining in the innings.

Only Friday, the HPC scored a 23-run win over ECB Blues in another T20 encounter at the same venue.

Opting to bat first on Saturday, HPC were off to a poor start but were bailed out by a 86-run, fourth wicket stand between captain Shamarh Brooks and fellow Barbadian Shane Dowrich.

Brooks hammered 46 off 39 balls with three fours and a six while Dowrich hit a more measured 44 from 42 balls with two fours and a six.

Kyle Corbin had earlier stroked a lively 18-ball 27, as seamer Mirwais Ashraf snared two for 19 from a tight four-over spell.

Afghanistan started well in reply, with Jawed Ahmed (19) and Noor-ul-Haq (11), adding 31 for the first wicket.

However, seamer Jason Holder (2-20) removed Jawed and the experienced Mohammed Shazad (1), before leg-spinner Kerron Cottoy destroyed the middle order with a spell of four for 30, to seal the HPC win.

Captain Nawroz Mangal top scored with 20 before becoming one of Cottoy’s victims.

On Friday, Brooks was also among the runs with 61 while wicketkeeper Devon Thomas lashed an unbeaten 72 to get the HPC up to 178 for six.

Brooks then grabbed three for 21 with his leg-spin while Holder (2-20) and pacer Brandon Bess (2-28) supported well as ECB Blues tumbled to 155 all out with four balls to spare.
