AN unidentified driver and a six-month-old baby, Melissa Douglas, were killed, and others badly injured in one accident, while severe injuries were sustained in another accident yesterday on the Mabura Road, some distance from the Mining Town of Linden.
The two accidents occurred within minutes of each other, around midday, with the first collision occurring when a truck ran into a minibus. The driver of the bus reportedly died on the spot, and he is still to be identified. The baby died at the Linden Hospital complex.
The accident with the truck and minibus was at an area called 35 Miles on the Mabura Road. Another man was seriously injured and had to be transferred to a city hospital.
Initial information said that 13 persons, including Curtis Garraway, of Nandy Park, Georgetown; Vernon Keryenoff, of 9 New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop; 27- year-old Carla Johnson of Mahdia; 33-year-old Natasha Young, of Cane Grove, who was going to visit her husband; Simone Lyte and Grover Adams; while those in the truck were George Allen and his son Sekki Jassento.
The other accident at Rockstone was due to a blow-out on a pick-up, PNN 4440.
Those injured in the pickup, which turned over a number of times, were Kevon Garraway, Henry Reid, Ravi Merai and Jeffrey Wong. Driving the cruiser was Ravi Merai.
He said they were returning from Mahdia where he had taken his employer to 58 Miles.
Garraway said, “We had just seen the first accident, and we saw this dead man in the bus, de had he lying down, then a little after all I know is we coming round the corner, we moving a little fast and the vehicle back start spin. The vehicle start slide and go in the corner, straight in the corner, then it topple like three times, and I fall out and it topple straight over me.”
Marcie Garraway was one of those who rushed to the hospital to see if her son Kevon was all right and was been refused entry to the emergency unit.
Garraway was up to press time in theatre, as he was suffering from internal bleeding and was in dire need of blood.
