NCN bans Vybz Kartel’s music from airwaves

JAMAICAN Dancehall mega star Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer, yesterday had his music banned from being played on the National Communications Network (NCN), 98.1 FM.

The state-owned radio station which happens to be Guyana’s only radio-broadcasting entity, stamped a sign of warning in its studio, stating “effective immediately, music of Vybz Kartel must not be played on air”.

When contacted, Martin Goolsaran, the company’s Production Manager, said he cannot comment on the matter at the present moment, but promised to do so at a later date.

The local  radio station is not the first to ban the controversial Jamaican’s music; in February (2011) with America celebrating Black History month New York’s Irie Jam Radio Station (93.5FM), made it known that they will not be playing any of Kartel’s music during that period.

Programme Director, Dubb Master Chris had stated that he “will not play any music from the artiste who has raised eyebrows for bleaching his skin”. Kartel was the centre of focus in Jamaica and even the Caribbean, due to the fact that he has made it clear that he is bleaching his skin.

Even though most people are against bleaching, his song “CAKE SOAP” was one of the most popularly rated tracks in and around the Caribbean.

But Kartel’s falling out with the people of Guyana came due to his non-appearance at two shows with the most recent being the Jam Zone Summer Break where he and his long time foe turned friends again, Movado, were to headline the regional night of the annual event.

While Movado came, a squadron of different stories filled the air on why the artiste (Vybz Kartel) didn’t show, which obviously angered the thousands of fans who were all eager to see him perform at the Guyana National Stadium.

Yesterday’s announcement of NCN not playing Kartel’s music on their airwaves, had mixed reviews on the world popular social network Facebook, where people shared their opinion on if NCN was right to not have his music played.
