Under Chetram Singh’s presidency of the Guyana Cricket Board, who had been at the helm for the past 19 years, cricket has been at its lowest level. Prior to Chetram Singh becoming the President, cricket was flourishing in Guyana especially in Demerara. There was a three-day competition called Case Cup. which was first division cricket played by top teams in Georgetown including East Coast, East Bank and West Demerara. There was a second division cricket called Northcote played by teams in East Coast, East Bank and West Demerara. There was also a one-day national limited over match involving top teams in Demerara. There was a two-day match in Georgetown known as Wight cup, all disappeared under Singh.
The cricket grounds are in a deplorable state. Many cricket grounds in Demerara except in Georgetown are more used as cattle pasture. They have been taken over by thick grass and vines.
In Essequibo there has never been any first-class competition. In fact, cricket of the highest level has been non-existent. Yet Essequibo competes in the few county cricket played by Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo.
In Berbice, the situation is different. The board is dedicated and active in promoting all levels of cricket. It is no wonder that Guyana has been competing for the last spot in the four-day regional tournament. Even the lately come Combine Campuses and Colleges and Windward Islands are beating us. What a shame, since Guyana has been a top regional team producing the most West Indies captains.
Journalists and sports enthusiasts should ask Chetram Singh what he has accomplished during his 19 years as head of cricket in Guyana as he prepares to bow out sometime this year.
Cricket level at lowest ever
