THE Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Second Lieutenant, who appeared in court recently, faced more assault charges yesterday. Denzil Mingo, 19 of Lot 39 Third Street, Alberttown, Georgetown made his second appearance also before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
This time, he was charged with having:
* on September 9, unlawfully assaulted Police Constable Rondell Gouveia, acting in the execution of his duty;
* the same day, made use of abusive language and assaulted Police Cadet Officer Glenroy Campbell;
* assaulted Quincy Anderson and Cadet Officer Frank Thompson and
* behaved disorderly at Brickdam Police Station.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to all the offences.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, had no objection to bail but requested that it be in a substantial amount to ensure the defendant returns for his trial.
The prosecutor told the Court that the September 9 incident, followed another on June 19, when Mingo, allegedly, assaulted freelance broadcaster Nerissa Pearson and Donella Broody at Cross and Leopold Streets.
According to the prosecutor, when police arrested Mingo, he told them he is a Second Lieutenant in the GDF, they cannot arrest him and he spat and cursed the ranks.
The magistrate asked the prosecutor why bail should be a substantial amount, noting that it is to ensure the defendant returns to court and Mingo has proven, he has returned, having been granted in the previous matters.
Mingo was granted self-bail and the cases were all transferred to another Court for September 29.
