Voir dire to determine alleged confession statement
JUSTICE Winston Patterson the presiding Judge in the Bee Hive rape case, is conducting a voir dire to determine the admissibility of an alleged confession statement by the accused, Tyronne Mortley. The prosecutor, Mrs. Teshana James-Lake, was about to put the alleged statement in evidence when defence counsel Mr. Compton Richardson objected, on the ground that the statement was not obtained in accordance with the rules.
As a consequence, the judge decided on the voir dire in the absence of the jury so as to determine the issue.
Prosecutor James-Lake, who is appearing in association with Mrs. Judith Gildharie-Mursalin, told the jury during the open trial that the accused had taken advantage of the good relationship between the father of the girl and himself to defile the 14-year old girl, in 2006.
The accused has pleaded not guilty.
The trial is continuing.
