Work on Hope Canal begins

An aerial shot of the ongoing works on the Hope/Dochfour Northern Relief Channel.
THE works are said to be about 14 percent completed. The government is carrying out the earth moving and excavation works for the canal and in so doing will be saving almost $1 billion. The total cost of the project is expected to be in the neighbourhood of US$15 million. Contracts have already been awarded for the execution of infrastructure works related to the project. It is expected that with the completion of the project, the communities along the Mahaica and Mahaicony Creeks will be spared of flooding whenever the East Demerara Water Conservancy reaches critical levels.
