JUST weeks before his 18th birthday, Shavez Welcome, alias Lagadeau, lost his life when the vehicle he was in crashed into a utility pole on Sunday night, killing him instantly on the No. 19 Public Road, a stone’s throw from the area where 12 persons lost their lives in a minibus accident on October 29 last.

The teenager, of Mayor and Town Council Housing Scheme, along with media worker Alistair Henry and his girlfriend, Babita Persaud, of Asylum Street, were returning from the Digicel sponsored curry competition at the Number 63 Beach, on the Corentyne Coast, when the accident occurred around 21:00hrs.
The severely injured former Berbice High School student, when removed from the vehicle, was already dead, eyewitnesses said.
Henry and Persaud were admitted to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where they both received emergency medical care.
Meanwhile, when this newspaper contacted the mother of the deceased, Jillian Welcome, she was too distraught to speak.
Welcome leaves to mourn his parents, a sister and other relatives.
