Old grievance alleged…

Army officer granted bail over police objection
ACTING Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday overruled a police objection and granted bail to Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Second Lieutenant Denzil Mingo on two charges of unlawful assault and threatening behaviour.
The 19-year-old defendant, of Lot 39 Third Street Alberttown, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to having, on June 19, unlawfully assaulted Nerissa Pearson and made use of threatening behaviour to Donella Broodie.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the two virtual complainants had been to a party and were standing on the road when Mingo passed in his car and Broodie hit the rear view mirror, resulting in an argument.
The prosecutor said Mingo came out of the vehicle and assaulted Pearson as well as used threatening behaviour to Broodie.
Harvey objected to pre-trial liberty for the Army officer, telling the court that Mingo is expected to face several charges for offences he, allegedly, committed against members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
Mingo disclosed that he was arrested last Friday on the basis of an old grievance after he objected to a number of civilians bracing on his car.
He was ordered to post $10,000 on each charge and return to court September 15.
