Khemraj Ramjattan plays to the gallery to win trust and votes
– but has proven to be the ultimate opportunist
AFC presidential candidate Khemraj Ramjattan, who lost the backbone membership of that fledgling party when Raphael Trotman was forced to concede the leadership position to him, despite the fact that he (Ramjattan) had brought scant support to that party, is showing his true colours in lambasting Government for giving some important jobs to Indo-Guyanese professionals, despite their qualifications and efficient, proficient and proactive delivery in their areas of skills; even though there may be a skills-bank deficiency in the nation in certain areas of expertise.
Guyanese have been fooled before and have allowed themselves to walk a path of destruction that has proven highly inimical to their interests – individually and collectively, so no political opportunist can sway them any longer with racist verbiage.
Yet, conversely, he goes to Indian communities and tells the people there to vote for his party because the PPP/C government does not look after their needs and that, among the AFC deliverables as a government, would be plentiful jobs and empowerment opportunities for Indo-Guyanese.
Ramjattan spent all his youth and until recent times passionately defending the programmes, policies and ideology of the PPP/C; yet, it is only when he was chastised by the party leadership for defending subsequently proven drug barons that he discovered all the flaws for which he is now attacking that party.
During the PPP/C’s recent outreach on the Essequibo Coast, PPP General Secretary and PPP/C’s presidential candidate, Mr. Donald Ramotar, exposed the real reason behind the expulsion of Ramjattan from that party, among which were less than honest practices, which would have negatively impacted the image of that party.
Today he is saying that the political cradle that shaped his ideologies – the PPP, practises anti-African policies in favour of Indo-Guyanese – that is the direction of his rhetoric when it suits his agenda of the moment.
What proves his complete ambivalence, however, is his current anti-Indian rhetoric while representing the defendants in his arguments in favour of Kissoon’s alleged contention that President Bharrat Jagdeo is a racist who disfavours Guyanese of African ancestry.
Ramjattan’s political rhetoric is ambidextrous; in American-Indian parlance, he speaks with a “forked tongue”. He takes positions as and when it suits him, in ways that can most influence his audience of the moment.
He has honed this strategy down to a fine art. As His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo has said, when the opposition, especially Ramjattan, goes to Port Mourant, they say one thing, then when they go to Buxton or Linden they say something quite different. President Jagdeo has said that he is President of all the people in Guyana and that his message, which is that of his administration, could be repeated verbatim all over the country, because his message is the same for every Guyanese.
With the abandonment of the AFC by the Trotman’s supporters, he courted and won on to his holy bandwagon all the former supporters of the now-defunct Rise, Organise and Rebuild (ROAR), the ideology of which would always be held suspect by the Trotman faction of the AFC, who are mainly PNC defectors. But their clever rhetoric is fooling no one and is gaining no traction; because, given a choice between a Jagdeo and a Ramjattan, everyone knows whom the voting public would choose.
And PPP/C presidential candidate Donald Ramotar has stated unequivocally that if that party had a choice, Bharrat Jagdeo would once more be leading the A-team into general elections in Guyana, and that his (Ramotar’s) governance would be based on continuity.
Guyana’s president Jagdeo has driven this nation’s development trajectory on an ever-upward pathway and he is constantly refusing powerful positions in regional and international organizations – adamantly stating that he is not looking for a job; so what makes Ramjattan and his ilk think that they can fool the Guyanese public – across all the divides, that they can provide answers that have already been delivered by a President – charismatic and highly popular countrywide, because he looks on and cares about all Guyanese without fear or favour.
Guyanese have been fooled before and have allowed themselves to walk a path of destruction that has proven highly inimical to their interests – individually and collectively, so no political opportunist can sway them any longer with racist verbiage.
