UNIVERSAL DVD Berbice Titans became two million dollars richer when they completed a remarkable victory against Georgetown Pitbulls in the final of the Jamzone Twenty20 Masters Cup on Sunday night in front of a mammoth crowd at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. The Georgetown side had to settle for the one-million dollar second prize after falling well short of the Titans’ total.
Pitbulls won the toss and chose to bowl first which gave the Titans the opportunity to set a challenging total of 151-6 in their allotted overs, then restrict the Pitbulls to 126 in 19.2 overs, winning by a comfortable 25 runs.
Berbice came out attacking with Anthony Bramble racing to 16 in eight balls which included four boundaries before falling to left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn with the score on 18, with his opening partner Richard Ramdeen at the other end on two.
Assad Fudadin then joined Ramdeen in the middle and took the score to 34 before the latter fell. Fudadin, along with Devon Clements (10) and Royston Crandon (22), kept the scoreboard ticking.
What was commendable was Berbice’s running between the wickets which put pressure on the Pitbulls and forced errors in the field. After the seventh over, the flow of boundaries eased and the Pitbulls partially contained the opposition with their bowling change strategies.
With five overs left, Berbice tried to accelerate their scoring and managed to get the run rate just over seven and added 38 runs to the total.
Krishmur Santokie was the pick of the bowlers for Georgetown as he grabbed 3-35 even though Fudadin was resilient in the middle with 55 from 48 balls.
The Pitbulls’ run chase saw Shemroy Barrington and Trevon Griffith, who played an imposing role, give their team a good start before Barrington fell to Esaun Crandon on 22, as they were 58-1.
Steven Jacobs (1) and West Indies big hitter Kieron Pollard (2) made no significant contribution to the total but Griffith stood firm and continued to score heavily before he was removed by Clements on 52 leaving Christopher Barnwell and Derwin Christian with the task of getting 69 runs in seven overs.
Two overs later, it was an evenly poised matchup but the removal of Barnwell (12) and Christian (21) and Jamal Hinckson (4) in quick succession spelt victory for the team from the Ancient County.
The game progressed and the balls ran out quickly with four lower order wickets crumbling in the space of seven runs.
The Crandon brothers claimed five wickets between them for Berbice while Veersammy Permaul, Eugene La Fleur, Devendra Bishoo and Clements grabbed one wicket each.
Earlier in the afternoon, the third place showdown had the Hits and Jams All Stars team and New Line Cavaliers contesting an entertaining third place showdown which the All Stars won. The All Stars won the toss and chose to bat and piled up 184-3 in 20 overs then restricted the opposition to 164-4 in 20 overs.
Dwayne Bravo and Christopher Gayle put on a massive 91-run partnership before Gayle went for 38, which included four fours and a six while Bravo led from the front with a tremendous unbeaten 106 from 67 balls. He laced his innings with seven fours and a similar number of sixes.
New Line’s chase had Lendl Simmons, Devon Smith and Andrew Lyght scoring 20, 66 and 30 respectively at the top order but the total was too far out of reach for the side even though it was a commendable performance.
