Wife shot, wounded by husband after money quarrel

THIRTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD Karen Kerr, of 309 Rohinital Street, Prashad Nagar, is nursing gunshot wounds at Woodlands Hospital, Georgetown, having been shot by her husband at their home early yesterday morning. Reports said she suffered several gunshot wounds during a quarrel with her miner husband about 02:30hrs.
Her sister, Carolina Welcome told the Guyana Chronicle she was in bed when she heard gunshots and thought the neighbours were being robbed.
She got up, after a while, upon hearing thumping sounds and ventured outside through her back door and started to walk up her sibling’s back steps but turned back as she was unsure what was happening.
Welcome said she returned inside her apartment on the lower flat of the house and it was after sometime, glancing through her front window, she saw her brother-in-law, Gavin Joseph called ‘Blacks’ by the gate.
She said, after a few minutes, she ventured outside and, in answer to her, he said he had just shot her sister but the latter was not going to die.
She said he walked away and has not been seen since.
Welcome said, at that point, she went upstairs and saw her sister covered in blood, bleeding from two gunshot wounds to the shoulder and took her to the hospital.
She said, apparently, Kerr and her husband quarreled although she did not hear any shouts or anything unusual. He only returned home, on August 5, from the mining concession he operates in Region One (Barima/Waini).
Welcome said all four of the couple’s children were at home at the time and she suspects the husband and wife had a misunderstanding over money before the shooting.
Up to press time, the police said they were hunting the shooter who has a licensed firearm and is in hiding.
