Progress continues with the dismantling of the wrecked Caribbean Airlines 737 airplane that crashed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on Saturday July 30. A team of engineers from Caribbean Airlines, the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority and the Ministry of Public Works are hard at work dismantling the ruined US$38M aircraft from the end of the runway, after which it will be handed over to CAL officials to be placed at a facility at the aerodrome.
To date, the nose and the first class compartment, along with the engines, have been detached and taken to the old Guyana Airways (GAC) hangar at the airport.
According to a source, the remaining part of the plane is expected to be pulled off of the runway, with the aid of a ramp, using the taxiway, code named ‘Charlie’.
Flight BW 523 from Piarco overshot the runway at 01:32hrs two Saturdays ago, crashing through the perimeter fence before coming to rest with 154 passengers and six crew members on board.
