On Chronicle’s mandate & responsibility
The Chronicle has oftentimes come under attack by the opposition media and opposition politicians and their satellites because this newspaper highlights the work of government and patterns of progress in the nation that are a direct result of government’s policies, programmes and interventions.
This newspaper makes no apologies for so doing, because the reportage is factual and, except for a rare mistake, which can be honestly attributed to human error, the stories are premised on the truth and accuracy at all times. However, this newspaper is a state entity, with responsibility for accurate information dissemination; especially in view of the plethora of misinformation and character assassination of government functionaries – which are often cleverly and dishonestly skewed and highly distorted facts to convey erroneous information, all in support of self-serving agendas of detractors; and even outright lies that are unceasingly peddled by the opposition collective.
Thus, the Government has a duty and a responsibility to the nation to provide truthful and accurate information as regards Government’s policies and programmes, because everything that government does impacts on the lives of the Guyanese people.
With almost every private media house – especially the newspapers and newscasts in the country openly supporting one opposition party or another, with the primary objective of obliterating the PPP/C administration, government has to ensure that the nation is reliably informed that the government functionaries and institutions that they have mandated to serve them are doing their jobs and delivering the requisite services; and if they are not optimally fulfilling their responsibilities to the nation the people need to know why, as well as have all their questions answered.
Kaieteur News and Prime News under the direction of Adam Harris – an unapologetic promoter of the People’s National Congress, have replaced the New Nation, the PNC organ which Harris once headed; and there are reporters still living who have horrible memories of the time Adam Harris helmed the Chronicle when they were victimized for refusing to carry PNC propaganda – sometimes outright lies that targeted the PPP.
C.N. Sharma is a presidential aspirant who has been accused of the most heinous of crimes by persons who have no political agenda; yet everytime the law moves to prosecute him for crimes that would have long since landed the ordinary man in jail he cries political victimization, and he is even supported by many individuals and organizations who purport to be representative of the vulnerable and voiceless persons in society, but who are instead thinly disguised anti-government lobbyists, who defeat the very victims they are supposed to represent in defence of Sharma.
He also allows openly libellous statements by political opposition protagonists with self-serving agendas that support his own political aspirations to be repeatedly broadcast, even character assassination of officials, especially government functionaries – and threats against a sitting president, with all the inherent dangers to the very life of the president.
Yet when he is called to account by the national media oversight body he cries foul and joins with like-minded detractors to concoct bizarre stories with no authenticity to keep himself in the limelight, create impressions in the eyes of the public that he is a victim of the government, when instead he is perceived as such a buffoon that he poses no threat to the ruling party; and to save himself from prosecution through the stories he concocts, which skews public opinion in his favour; which will not win him votes, but which often create false impressions about government that can indirectly stymie government’s developmental thrust while simultaneously diverting attention from his alleged criminal activities.
It is alleged that the manner in which Glenn Lall, owner of Kaieteur News and C.N. Sharma built their fortunes – both of whom are claiming to be ardent anti-corruption champions, cannot stand up to public scrutiny.
There have been many allegations of relief money and resources meant for the Mahaica flood victims many years ago, as well as other monies purportedly collected for charities being diverted to private use.
There have been accusations of wholesale electricity theft by one media mogul whose media entity has no qualms about concocting sensational stories about rival business associates under the premise that some mud will stick on the victim if enough is consistently thrown, especially if the victim has been facilitated by the government to pursue investment in the country.
A close relative of the primary person behind Capitol News is a PNC candidate who hosts television programmes for that primary opposition party and all their newscasts are skewed in support of the opposition elements in the nation.
The Stabroek News, which undeniably played a major role in the fight against undemocratic forces pre-1992 elections, did so in support of the elitist WPA–leaders who were leading academics and members of Guyana’s upper-class.
In the wake of the demise of that party that newspaper has openly supported the fledgling AFC, which the upper-class elements in society have veered toward. This is evident from its content and its contributors and its blatantly anti-government stand.
The opposition elements are correct in alleging that there is no free press in the country – because every media house is affiliated to and carry the line of its adjunctive opposition party.
Hence the imperative of the government sustaining a machinery that can, without compromising factual reportage, accurately disseminate requisite information that can keep the citizens of the land abreast of matters of concern to their welfare and wellbeing without sensationalizing issues through lies and misinformation.
That is the mandate and the responsibility of the Chronicle and the electronic media of the state. This, therefore, is the only true people’s newspaper in the land.
