Region 2 has seen a dramatic transformation under the PPP/C

THE Region 2 administration under the leadership of Chairman Ali Baksh in collaboration with central government has drastically changed the demographic landscape of the Essequibo Coast and the Pomeroon River district, over the last decade. From a dilapidated transport service of the 1980s, Region Two now has four car parks, littered with the latest model of vehicles, consistent with a good taxi service. The two-day ordeal from Charity to Moruca, in the NWD has been reduced to six hours return. The one and only PNC KSI supply centre once located at Anna Regina where political homage was imposed to purchase rations, has been supplemented by dozens of consumer outlets, as well as eight spanking supermarkets.
There are now 14 hotels exclusive of the Mainstay Holiday Resort and above all for the first time, “Oasis Hotel” at Queenstown, a village bought by freed slaves in 1840. From three gas stations of the 80s, we now have 16 such stations to supply the needs of motorists with vehicle accessories.
The 12-mile road now enjoys a 38-mile bitumen surface from Charity to Supenaam. The Wartsila plant commissioned at Anna Regina in 1995 by the late Dr Cheddi Jagan, has seen a network of electricity supply, in all 17 housing schemes in the former Cinderella County.
The icon of the rice industry, Mr. Kayman Sankar, has established the most convenient airstrip which facilitates the needs of Government, private sector and farmers on a daily basis and emergencies at nights. With inputs in Region 2 such as a Police Training School, Guyana School of Agriculture, Cyril Potter College, Essequibo Technical Institute, UG branch of IDCE, a GDF base, prominent fire station and four commercial banks, Cinderella has found her slippers.
As old as age two, to the pensioners, the ‘cell phone’ is a priority in everyday life. However, the greatest benefactor of the Guyanese nation being the PPP/C government  inasmuch as they have linked Region 5 with the Berbice Bridge to Region 6; Chairman Ali Baksh is seeking central government‘s help to link Region 2 to Regions 3 and 1 (Barima/Waini) by a road link. The intention is to build a seven-mile road from the Barama Complex at Buck Hall to the right bank of the Supenaam Creek parallel to the Essequibo River. This intended road will be located on a low sand reef, on a reserve at the parameters of over 60 farmers’ concessions.
The road link will be done by a pontoon service at the Supenaam Creek. This venture will facilitate dozens of miners working in Region One, workers from the Barama Complex as well as the promotion of agriculture in the area.
The Chairman also mentioned that this project could be a joint venture, since a toll could be taken as hundreds of workers will use this facility from Charity in the Pomeroon to the Upper reaches of Port Kaituma, NWD, as well as facilitate the residents of Caria-Caria in the Essequibo River.
