July causing death accused on $780,000 bail

THE driver accused of causing the death of Rozena Razack by dangerous driving last July 21,in Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton Thursday. Lakeram Prashad, 36, of Annandale Railway Line Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara, was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and was put on a total of $780,000 bail.
He was not required to plead to the charge that stated, on July 21, on High Street, Georgetown, he drove motor car PDD 7478 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Razack.
Prashad, however, pleaded not guilty to the other charge, which alleged that he was under the influence of alcohol to such at an extent as to be incapable of controlling the vehicle.
Making the successful bail application for him, defence counsel Vic Puran said he is not a flight risk as he had been on station bail prior to his court appearance.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, had no objection to his pre-trial liberty but requested that Prashad lodge his passport and report to Brickdam Police Station every Monday and Friday and make his next appearance in another court on September 16.
