Friction Test at CJIA confirms runway up to standards
PRELIMINARY results from a Friction Test conducted yesterday at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri revealed that the surface of the runway is in conformity with the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle yesterday, sources close to the investigation revealed that the Friction test was conducted by Barbadian-based expert Mr. Roger Best, and based on preliminary results so far, the runway – especially the main runway – at the CJIA has met all specifications and standards as approved by ICAO.
Mr. Best, who is employed as Engineers Services Supervisor at the Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados, arrived in Guyana with the ‘Findlay Irvine GripTester’ that was used to conduct yesterday’s Test.
The Friction Test was conducted in the presence of CJIA officials, representatives from Caribbean Airlines and the US National Transportation Safety Board.
This forms part of an ongoing probe of the crash landing of CAL Flight 523 in Guyana last Saturday with 160 persons on board. All passengers and crew survived the accident.
