At Square of the Revolution…

APNU claims mandate to take back Guyana
APNU (A Partnership For National Unity) held a rally at Square of the Revolution in Georgetown, last Friday, declaring that it had a mandate to “take back Guyana.”
Speakers on the platform pointed to the need for setting up of a government of national unity and said it is a task to which the APNU is committed.
The first to speak for the evening, Dr. David Hinds, dubbed the campaign ‘Operation Take Back Guyana’.
He said APNU is a partnership of political parties and organisations which came together to do something special and new. It did not mean that they have given up their identities but have collaborated for a common good.
Hinds said APNU is a force to reckon with. “The APNU is a symbolism of the PNC and the WPA – parties which had big differences in the past – coming together, transcending their differences in the interest of all Guyana.”
Others who followed were Members of Parliament (MPs) Ms. Dawn Hastings and Mr. Basil Williams, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine and APNU Presidential Candidate, Brigadier (ret’d) David Granger.
They alluded to various problems plaguing society, including unemployment, crime, what they referred to as ‘a failing education sector’ while dubbing the judicial system delinquent.
Also in the gathering for the meeting, which got off to a late start, were Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and Parliamentary Opposition, Mr. Robert Corbin and other APNU officials and supporters.
Hastings, who hails from the Upper Mazaruni Region, greeted the crowd in Akawaio language and said she is convinced that the APNU’s vision of a government of national unity is the answer to the fears of the country’s indigenous peoples.
She called on all Amerindians and, more particularly the toshaos, to support the APNU and its Presidential Candidate Granger, stating that, under his administration, there will be a good life for all Guyanese.
PNCR Vice-Chairman Williams noted that APNU has been formed at a time when Guyana is beset by a number of problems. He revealed that the initiative has been in motion for a long time and the partnership now formed “could rescue this nation.”
Roopnaraine reminded that the people are the owners of the nation and not those currently in office and concurred it is time to reclaim Guyana and fight for social justice.
Granger said the majority of Guyanese now want change and APNU is searching for the most qualified to create a government of national unity to effect that change that will not be achieved under a continued People’s Progressive Party/Civic administration.
He charged that the PPP/C continues to hold on to the policies of yesterday while APNU embraces those of tomorrow and concluded by urging all Guyanese who yearn for change to share the vision for a renewed Guyana.
The throng was entertained to pulsating ‘boom boom’ music and guest artistes after marching through some streets of Georgetown to arrive at the venue.
