Firemen had to cut through protective grill to fight the fire
FIRE Chief Marlon Gentle yesterday said that investigations are continuing following the fire which consumed Willo’s Grocery Store at Mackenzie, Linden, early Wednesday morning.
The fire began at about 03:00hrs and firemen, with some difficulty, managed to cut through protective grillwork to get to the building. They managed to contain the blaze to the building.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but so far it appears to be an electrical fire. The grocery was owned by Lennox Wilson, and was located aback of the old Mackenzie Market.
The Fire Chief stated that by the time the fire tenders arrived on the scene, the building was engulfed in flames.
The business has been in existence for more than 30 years and the businessman said that once God is willing, and with the support of the community, he will re-open his grocery store.
The Fire Service said that this year so far, 59 buildings were destroyed by fire, 28 severely damaged, 79 slightly damaged. The fires left 231 persons homeless and killed seven persons.
Statistics show that this year, the major causes of fires were faulty electrical appliances and wiring, both internal and external, domestic disputes, and electricity theft.
The Fire Service received 663 calls for this year, so far.
