Stabroek Rotary awards winners of peace poster competition

WINNERS of the Rotary Club of Stabroek’s national Peace Poster Competition have been honoured at a function at Pegasus Hotel.
The competition was one of the activities planned by the club to celebrate World Understanding Month observed during February.

The competition promoted Rotary’s Fourth Avenue of Service – continued quest for goodwill, peace and understanding among people of the world. The initiative targeted young people aged 12-14, who were given an opportunity to visually depict their interpretation of the competition’s theme “Spreading peace through cultural diversity.”
Posters were evaluated by a panel of judges and entries were judged for creativity, originality, artistic merit, expression of competition’s theme, explanation of artwork and presentation.
Amanda Singh of Garnett Street, Georgetown copped first place and received a cash prize of $50,000 and a plaque. Second place was awarded to Tatiana Rahaman of Grove, East Bank Demerara, and she received a cash prize of G$30,000 and a plaque; and third place went to Fabian Bianchini of Kitty, Georgetown, and he received a cash prize of G$20,000 and a plaque.

Entries were received from various regions of Guyana and the entries showed that young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. The club is proud to have provided an opportunity for the nation’s children to document visually their concerns and priorities concerning peace and goodwill.
The posters will be used to promote positive messages of peace, human rights, justice, racism and intolerance, in an effort to reduce some of the barriers to sustainable human development.
