Members of the media should be courteous, polite

I wish to comment on the incident that took place on Wednesday July 27, 2011 at the Office of the President, during the post-cabinet press briefing, and which was subsequently reported in the media. Even though I was not there, I have a feeling that I can somehow capture the essence of what took place at the briefing.  But first, I humbly and sincerely state an important point. It must be accepted (whether or not one likes it) that a certain type of culture prevails in every forum. For example, at a church meeting, there is a format and an appropriate language. Together this makes for a specific culture which attendees adhere to. So, at no point in time, can one speak ‘out of order’ and use ‘inappropriate’ language. Everything and everyone must confirm. I suggest that those involved and interested visit a court of law and carefully observe what obtains. Also, one should understand the ‘why’ and ‘what’ of something called ‘contempt of court.’ Bearing this in mind, one can understand and get a good picture of what happened at the Office of the President. So what are my points?

First, it seems as though, an obstreperous and recalcitrant ‘bad boy’ came into Neil Marks, and overcame him. Thus he was peeved, and wanted more turns and longer explanations. In fact, one gets the impression that Neil Marks had a predetermined agenda and attitude. I firmly believe that Neil Marks has an exalted opinion of himself, and that his irrational rancour stems from his obvious disgruntlement with the government of the day. So I am not surprised by his infantile behaviour and ignorance. If it is true, then even his high school qualifications also form his self- frightening halo, which he seems wont to compensate for.

My second point deals with a misconception among the anti-PPP/C media fraternity. There seems to be the idea (I do not know where it came from) that the PPP/C is a party of ‘numb skulls.’ I ask that folks go back and watch the BBC’s “Hard Talk” that featured President Bharrat Jagdeo. I also suggest that a few people go and talk with Freddie Kissoon, who thinks he is a ‘heavyweight’ intellectual, and find out how his court case is coming along. And for those who like to slight Dr. Roger Luncheon, I ask that you seek to debunk him, when given the opportunity. So the PPP/C is aptly qualified, legally, intellectually and experientially. Gordon Moseley, with his congenital vocal disorder, found this out. Freddie Kissoon is soon to be tamed. And how sad it is that no one is learning. Soon the petite, neophytic Neil Marks will discover that his journalistic weight is quite straw-like.

I close by reminding the media that proper ethics and etiquette must prevail at all times. Also, the media must not presume and practise partisan reporting. All members must be courteous and dignified.
