THE lives of almost 100 orphans, drawn from several institutions, have been enriched as a result of corporate funding by several agencies, including Digicel, which sponsored the Young @ Art programme which offers art, drama, craft, music and sports.
The programme is being held at the Church of The Nazarene in Queenstown.
Digicel donated $500,000 to the programme and provided art supplies, among other things, for the children to explore their skills in drawing and painting.
Some of the children were yesterday engaged in a game of cricket while the younger children were colouring from a drawing book and the others were busy painting.
Digicel yesterday made a presentation of school bags and stationery to the children, who had already received tee-shirts among other things.
Digicel Public Relations Manager, Shonnet Moore, said that it was Digicel’s intention to assist children with art programmes; and when Mrs. Collette Jones-Chin came to them with the programme they agreed to be a part.
Jones-Chin, Organizer/Facilitator, told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that the art class is the biggest, and she enrolled 100 children but only 92 showed up.
She explained that her mother died when she was young, she understands the plight of children who are orphans.
Hence the Young@Art Summer Programme, funded by various sponsors.
The Young @ Art Summer Programme engages students between the ages of four and 15, and offers art, craft, dance, voice training/music and sporting activities.
The objective of the Young @ Art Summer Programme is to inculcate in the minds of youths, a new form of creative thinking.
The programmes include providing fun, developing skills, encouraging craftsmanship, building self-confidence and expression.
Yesterday the art work of the children were on display, including the stained glass technique, collage, abstract pieces that portray emotions, and several water colour pieces.
The Young @ Art programme was designed with the intention of encouraging children to explore their limitations of creativity by using the visual and theatre arts.
