…says Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar
THE People’s Progressive Party’s Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar has dismissed as misleading statements made by the leader of the Alliance for Change, Khemraj Ramjattan, about a close affiliation between the ruling party and U.S. – based Guyanese businessman, Ed Ahmad. At a press briefing yesterday, Ramotar made it clear that Ahmad had made no financial contributions to the PPP/C 2011 political campaign, and neither is he considered a part of the government.
“Mr. Ahmad has not given a cent to our campaign for the 2011 elections,” Ramotar stated.
He added that this misinformation from the AFC leader only shows the type of person he is. He said that Ramjattan was the one who introduced him to Ahmad.
“I want to say that I met Ahmad through Mr. Ramjattan many years ago, at the Pegasus Hotel, before 2006, because he was still a part of the of the PPP/C membership; around that time he made a glowing introduction about the man, and he was telling me what a wonderful person Ahmad is,” Ramotar said.
Ramotar said the main reason for Ramjattan leaving the PPP stemmed from a meeting with Dr. Jagan when Ramjattan was invited to speak about the background of his clients among whom were many smugglers.
This was made evident when then head of the Customs Department complained about the type of cases Ramjattan was defending in the courts.
Mr.Ramotar said that for Ramjattan to now paint himself all white and throw Ahmad in the PPP’s face is totally misleading.
Ahmad was on July 22 last arrested in New York on mortgage fraud charges and was released on bail of US$2.5M, according to an edition of the New York Daily News.
Ramjattan’s claim that Ahmad is close to the PPP/C is misleading
