MINISTER of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony, on Wednesday met with the players of the National Senior Basketball Team, who will participate in the Caribbean Championships, in Nassau, Bahamas.
The minister encouraged the team to represent Guyana well through discipline and hard work. “Be good ambassadors of the country,” he said.
Dr Anthony said he hopes Guyana’s participation in the basketball tournament will be an annual feature and indicated that his ministry hopes to develop the sport across Guyana.
The tournament will run from today to July 29 and will include teams from various Caribbean territories, such as Antigua, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos, and the Virgin Islands.
Recently-announced captain of the team, Steve Neils, said that in preparation his team have trained over the period of a few months and they are looking forward to the tournament. He thanked the minister for his support and gave the assurance that they will do their best.
Others present at the meeting were Director of Sport Neil Kumar and president of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation, David Patterson.
