FAMILY members of 46-year-old Basmat Anantram of Seawell village, Corentyne, are pleading with the relevant authorities to assist the family in the search for the woman, as they are fearful that she could have encountered some dreadful situation. During a telephone interview with the Guyana Chronicle, the missing woman’s brother, Deochand Pooran, indicated that it has been more that a month since his sister went missing and still the family has got no word about Basmati.
According to family members, this was the first time that the couple was experiencing these problems.
“When Krishna (the husband) came back to Guyana people were telling him that she (Basmat) was with another man by the name of ‘Rakie’, but that was not true, and because of that, he was tormenting her and she just decided to go away and stay with a friend,” Sunita, the woman’s niece, explained.
The family said it was a few concerned neighours from the area who disclosed to them that there were no signs of the woman since the day after her husband brought her home from the friend.
The neighbours said that around 4:00am in the morning, they saw him in the hammock. However, they were not alarmed since the woman could have been in the house.
As the day progressed, persons became more suspicious about the woman’s whereabouts, but when questioned, Krishna related that he had left the home and when he returned she was not there.
“When we spoke to his daughter who lives in the area, she told me that they made a report to the police station about her being missing, but it was noting of the sort,” Pooran said.
They related that it was only two days after the woman went missing that her husband left for the U.S. again.
The family said that when they tried to enquire from the man’s daughter about his whereabouts and a contact number, she bluntly refused to answer any of their questions.
Anantram’s family is of the view that the man and his daughter could be the ones behind Basmat’s disappearance.
They are pleading with anyone who may be knowledgeable about the woman’s whereabouts to make contact with the nearest police station, or family members on telephone numbers 264-3238 or 333-4711.
Police have since launched an investigation into the matter.
