… wins 12th annual John T. Memorial 102-mile cycle race
GUYANA’S physically challenged cyclist Walter Grant-Stuart stole the hearts of Anguillans when he won the 12th Annual 102-mile John T. Memorial Cycle Race on Sunday in a driving finish from Francl Pangan of St Maarten in a time of 3:42:12. Reports out of Anguilla by Carl Thomas, a former sports reporter, informed that Walter-Grant was always in the leading bunch during the race and the crowd on hand was in awe of his cycling ability.
So stunned after the race a few spectators went around with boxes and collected money from the crowd to present to him. Walter-Grant, who recently proved himself among the top cyclists in Guyana first rode in the A+ race on Saturday but his cycle developed mechanical failure and this forced to drop out from that event.
However, word was soon out about his performance and the crowds came out to see the ‘One-Hand’ cyclist from Guyana.
Guyanese residing in Anguilla jumped for joy when he crossed the finish line. Another Guyanese cyclist Godfrey Pollydore, a former top cyclist in Anguilla, occupied the 7th position in that race.
Over 50 cyclists from around the Caribbean participated in the event, namely from Aruba, St Kitts & Nevis, Guadeloupe, Barbados, Curacao and St Maarten. (Joe Chapman)
