PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Jamaica survived a late stumble to beat Barbados by four wickets yesterday and capture the West Indies Under-15 Championship.
Chasing a meagre 77 for victory at the University of Trinidad and Tobago ground, Jamaica reached 78 for six to finish on 40.1 points.
T&T finished second with 34.6 points after whipping Leeward Islands by six wickets, while Guyana were third after drawing with Windward Islands.
Resuming the day on 57 for six in their second innings, Barbados were bowled out for 79 with Christopher Tufton (3-10) and Ramaal Lewis (3-22) taking three wickets apiece.
Jamaica then stumbled and stuttered before reaching 78 for six, with Odain McCatty scoring 19 and Malcolm Whyte striking an unbeaten 17 to see his side home.
Spinner Chad Williams snatched four for 22 to inject panic into the Jamaica camp. He finished the match with 12 for 40.
At Honeymoon Park, T&T used another strong batting performance to romp to victory and take full honours from the encounter.
Their bowlers limited the Leewards to 134 all out after the visitors resumed the day on 120 for seven, with Shane Smith (3-28) Jesse Bootan (3-15) finishing with the best figures.
Shawn Tuitt was left stranded nine short of a century on 91.
Brian Christmas then stroked 44 and Jeremy Solozano, 36, as T&T eased to their victory target of 126 for four.
At the National Cricket Centre, the Windwards frustrated Guyana’s victory charge, to force a draw.
Set 267 for victory, the Windwards finished on 199 for eight thanks to 56 from Chad Phillip and 45 from Gidron Pope.
Guyana’s attack was led by the consistent Steven Sankar with four for 66.
Earlier, Tagenarine Chanderpaul struck his second half-century of the match with 58 while Kemo Paul got 50, as Guyana pushed their overnight 91 for two to 254 for seven off 60 overs.
Chanderpaul is the son of West Indies batting star Shiv Chanderpaul.
